Con. Res. 197, a resolution that would establish Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month. This resolution has gained the support of many members in the House and has been instrumental in forming the US COPD Coalition that has provided a much-needed platform to educate Americans about a disease that, if diagnosed early, can be treated. In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 10 million Americans suffer from COPD, and there may be as many as 14 million more undiagnosed cases. People with COPD are being robbed of their breath as the disease viciously works to collapse airways and obstruct airflow. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America, and is projected to be the third leading cause of death by 2020. In 2000, for the first time, the number of women dying from COPD surpassed the number of men dying from this chronic lung disease. COPD costs the US economy an estimated $30.4 billion a year; in 2000, there were 8 million office visits to doctors, and 726,000 hospitalizations related to COPD. ******(Add personal information or delete this paragraph) Convey experiences with COPD whether coping on a personal level, or witnessing how a family member, patient, or friend has dealt with the disease. Explain how the disease limits physical exertion, ability to work, social activities, and sleeping patterns.******* Throughout the month of November 2001, we held press conferences, performed lung-function screenings, spoke at national conferences, and participated in media tours around the country. As a result, Americans have become more aware of COPD, and we are hopeful that undiagnosed individuals will be encouraged to seek diagnosis and treatment. But, there is still a great need for public awareness, so we are urging you to become a cosponsor of H. Con Res 197, an important resolution that will designate November 2002 as COPD Awareness month. This will continue our work to provide a much-needed focus for COPD, open the door for greater public education of its symptoms and treatment, and raise the national level of awareness of its increasing prevalence. On April 4, 2002 public health, patient, health care professional, and consumer organizations contacted the President to ask him to designate November as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness month. Please, call the White House Office of Presidential Messages and Proclamations at 202-456-5917 and voice support for this request.
